Solar systems last decades. Roofs do not. Sooner or later a house with an array on it needs a new roof, and the panels have to come off and go back on.
This is where things go wrong. Roofing crews are not electrical contractors, and detaching a live solar array is electrical work. Panels get damaged in handling, mounting hardware gets reused when it should not be, and the old penetrations get covered rather than properly re-flashed.
The leaks show up later. So does the discovery that the system was never correctly re-commissioned and has been underproducing since the roof went on.
Off, stored, and back on — by the same licensed crew
We de-energize and remove the array, label everything, and store the panels safely on site while the roofers work. Handling is the difference between a system that goes back up intact and one that quietly loses a few modules to micro-cracking.
We coordinate directly with your roofer on timing so the roof is not left open and the job does not stall waiting on the other trade. New penetrations get properly flashed and sealed on reinstall — this is the step that determines whether the roof leaks in three years.
Once the array is back up, we re-commission it and confirm production. Decades of doing this work is what makes it uneventful.

What to expect
Schedule with your roofer
We work backward from the roofing schedule so the array comes off just before work starts and goes back on as soon as it is done.
De-energize and remove
System is shut down safely, panels and racking come off labeled, and everything is stored protected on site.
Reinstall and re-flash
Array goes back up with properly sealed penetrations. Mounting hardware is replaced where it should not be reused.
Re-commission
System is brought back online and production verified, so you know it is working rather than assuming it is.

Can my roofer just take the panels off?
We would not recommend it. Disconnecting and reconnecting a solar array is electrical work, and it is worth having a licensed electrical contractor do it. Damaged panels and improperly re-commissioned systems are the common outcomes when it is handled as part of the roofing job.
How long are the panels off the roof?
It depends entirely on the roofing timeline. We schedule around your roofer so the gap is as short as the roof work allows.
Will removing the panels void my warranty?
It depends on the specific warranty. Some require the work to be performed by a licensed contractor, which is one reason to have it done properly. Check your paperwork — and if the original installer is gone, the manufacturer warranty may still stand on its own.
Should I replace the roof before going solar?
If the roof has only a few years left, yes. Paying to remove and reinstall an array later costs considerably more than sequencing the work correctly the first time.
